at kwic, we envision to be a leading and dynamic investment company in eastern and southern africa, providing financial independence to its shareholders and influencing economic development.

Introduction & Background

The Kenya Women Investment Company (KWIC) was established in November 2004 as an all-women savings and investment corporation, legally incorporated as a company limited by shares and operating under the Companies Act in Kenya. The company’s shareholders are professionals and businesswomen, mainly based around Nairobi but also dispersed as far as the USA, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

Governance

Leadership is provided by the Board of Directors, which comprises of a Chairperson, Vice Chair, Secretary, Vice Secretary, Treasurer, Vice Treasurer, and a Member. There are 3 sub-committees in operation, namely the Governance Committee, Social/Welfare Committee, and the Business Development Committee, which work alongside the Board. The sub-committees are chaired by Board Members.

The Board has focused on various investment avenues that provide good returns, such as Commercial Real Estate, the Stock Market, Money Market Funds, and land.

KWIC supports its members during family milestones such as weddings, graduations, bereavements, and other social events. It has created a family that has bonded for over twenty years and enriched its members with more than financial gains!

Founder

In the year 2004, our founding member, Dr Kate Getao had a vision of creating a vehicle to facilitate women’s investment to enhance their economic welfare.

After the launch of the concept in late 2004, several activities took place until 2006, when KWIC was formalized as a legal entity. These activities included:

  • The initial stages of shareholder recruitment
  • Writing of memorandum and articles of association
  • Formulation of a common purpose
  • Setting up bank accounts
  • Accumulation of savings
  • Setting up structures to enhance governance and investment functions

Company Performance

KWIC has achieved significant growth over the years, which started from the members contributing Kshs. 5,000 each per month, and today, KWIC has a total net worth of over Kshs 150M, which comprises 98% of the assets belonging to the ladies and 2% to the company. The company has continued to sell its parcels of land, with the current project being the disposal of the  Embuyangat property.
